The MBOX SmallHD 1703 P3X Grading LUTs are designed to help you perceive proper contrast for HDR grading on the SmallHD 1703 P3X.  THESE LUTS ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR THE SmallHD 1703 HDR OR the 1703 P3, ONLY THE P3X.

There are twelve LUTs provided here:

These will allow you to cross convert SMPTE ST.2084 (Perceptual Quantization or PQ, used in HDR10) and ARIB STD-B67 (Hybrid Log Gamma or HLG) HDR signals from any of three color spaces (Rec. 2020, P3 D65, and Rec. 709) into the native color space and dynamic range of the display.

Since the SmallHD 1703 P3X has a dynamic range of about 11 stops, you cannot see proper contrast throughout the image at the same time - you will either clip the darks, the brights or both.  As such, we've created two brightness ranges you can select from for grading: Highs, and Lows.

The "Highs" LUTs allow you to center the 1703 P3X's dynamic range in the highs, from around 0.05 nit to 900 nits.  When applying this LUT, set the SmallHD's brightness to 80%

The "Lows" LUTs allow you to center the 1703 P3X's dynamic range in the deep lows, from around 0.005 to 1 nits, allowing you to see the contrast in the darkest parts of the image.  When applying this LUT, set the 1703 P3X's brightness to 0%.

We recommend beginning grading with the "Highs" LUT, then using the "Lows" to extend your darks.  Disable the internal color space conversions on the SmallHD when using these LUTs.

For grading in Hybrid Log Gamma, we have provided two slightly different HLG monitoring LUTs - Version 1 and Version 2.  Version 1 has slightly better detail retention in the lows, with a minor trade off for contrast.  Version 2 has better contrast and brightness ranges, but has a minor trade off for color reproduction in the very highs.  Compare the results you get with these LUTs and the image on your other SDR displays to determine which you'd prefer to use while grading.

When possible, we recommend loading these LUTs as the calibration LUTs for a studio grading environment.  This will minimize the amount of time you spend switching on and off LUTs on individual screens.
